Hatha Yoga Poses for Travel: Forward Fold

July 02, 2010

Standing forward fold, or uttanasana in Sanskrit, is one of the hatha yoga poses that exudes complete surrender.  While traveling, whether it be a vacation, work trip, or yoga travel retreat, moving from one place to another causes both physical and mental stress.

Physically, the muscles of the back, hips, and legs begin to tighten as they are likely being held stagnant over extended periods of time either sitting in a small place or standing.  Mentally, your mind starts to gather stressors in the form of timetables and the to-do list you’ve planned for yourself upon arrival at your destination.  These stressors will form into long-term mental formations (samskaras) that will continue to haunt you if not processed.

Yoga Travel Towel Review

June 03, 2010

Yoga travel towels changed my life.  Seriously.  A yoga towel is a mat-sized sheet of cloth or microfiber that is used to drape over your yoga mat.

As soon as I started using a yoga towel, my yoga practice had improved.  I no longer had to worry about slipping in postures, and I could then focus on the important stuff: alignment, breath, and focus.  They helped improve my practice so much that I now refuse to do yoga without one.  Yoga travel towels are considered to be a must-have prop as they will significantly change the way you practice yoga.

Prevent Slippage

The yoga travel towel benefits me the most by helping with slippage.  My hands and feet tend to sweat, especially during a vigorous yoga class.  I would enter a downward-facing dog and would immediately need to struggle with drawing my hands back so that they don’t slip forward and fly out in front of me.  Ouch, faceplant.  This action is counter-intuitive for the posture.  In downdog, we’re supposed to be pushing into the ground to elongate the spine.

Once I purchased a yoga travel towel, that all changed.  The grip of a good towel (like the Yogitoes skidless, see below) allowed me to focus on alignment.  I finally realized what everyone was talking about when they said that downdog is a resting pose.

Cushion

Yoga travel towels provide an extra layer of cushion on top of your mat.  If you’re knees get sensitive in lunges then a yoga towel will certainly help.  I find that the extra cushion adds a level of comfort to any of the Hatha yoga poses, whether it be to protect your cranium in a headstand, or just to feel nice underneath your feet in mountain pose.

Hygienic

A good yoga travel towel also functions as a sanitary absorbent towel for sweaty sessions of hot or Bikram yoga.  Yoga mats are made of materials that tend to deteriorate from contact with sweat.  Your yoga towel will serve as a protection for your mat.  The best part is that they’re machine washable, unlike your mat, so they can be easily cleaned.

Convenience

Yoga travel towels are a travel-friendly alternative to a yoga mat.  You can fold it up nicely and fit them in just about any piece of luggage.  I travel a lot and a yoga mat is simply too inconvenient to bring with me.  A yoga towel folds up to the size of a tshirt and I don’t even notice the weight.

My Favorite Yoga Travel Towel

I’ve tested a few different yoga towels and the “Yogitoes premium skidless towel” is definitely my favorite.  Its made of a polyester nylon blend fiber that grips well and has great absorption.  It sticks any surface (mat or floor) due to its hundreds of silicon nubs.  Machine washable as well.  I highly recommend this amazing product.  If you don’t already have a yoga travel towel, get one now, you won’t be sorry!

Yoga Travel Tip – Yoga in Your Hotel Room

May 19, 2010

Yoga travel brings you the next in the series of yoga travel tips: yoga in your hotel room.  Yoga can be an effective remedy for the stresses of long distance travel.  After a long flight or drive, the body begins to tighten up which can result in discomfort.  The mind starts to get tired and exhausted, perhaps from looking at too many useless Skymall products or solving sudoku puzzles.  Upon landing and reaching your hotel room, take some time to reverse the effects of travel.  The physical and mental benefits of yoga will help to ground and relax you, getting you ready for a sound nights sleep.

Whether you’re on a business trip or a travel vacation, make sure to do a little yoga in your hotel room.  It’s not the same as a yoga studio, but with a few tricks, you can come close.  Follow this simple 15 minute routine made of basic hatha yoga poses that can be done in your hotel room to reconnect with yourself after a long journey.

Start off with mountain pose, tadasana.  Long distance travel, especially by plane, can tend to energetically un-ground you.  Reestablish your connection with the earth in mountain pose.  With your feet hip-width apart, toes facing forward, press into the ground with your feet as your grow tall.  Engage your core as you drop your tailbone towards the earth.  Roll your shoulders down your back and extend the top of your head towards the ceiling.  Now close your eyes.  Notice the foundation and stability of this posture.  Notice your breath and the calming effect it has.  Hold this posture for two minutes.

Hatha Yoga Poses for Travel: Hip Openers

May 04, 2010

The hips are an extremely important area of the body.  This region forms the intersection between the lower body and the spine, thus requiring both mobility and stability.  Often neglected, especially in a society of long-duration sitting sessions, the hips tend to get very tight.  If you notice yourself getting sore and tight after a long day at the office, just imagine how you’d feel after a plane trip across the world.  In this article, Yoga Travel discusses the benefits of a family of Hatha yoga poses: hip openers.

The hips, like any other muscle, get tight from being stagnant.  Travel logistics such as long flights or train rides can be a nightmare for the hips.  When you’re sitting, your hips are flexed, meaning that an angle is formed between the torso and thighs.  This causes the hip flexor muscles (found on the front of the pelvis) to shorten and tighten, tipping the pelvic bowl and resulting in lower back pain. Yoga Travel Book Review

April 30, 2010

There’s nothing like a good book to pass time.  Before your next yoga travel adventure, don’t forget to pick up an excellent yoga book.  It will make those long plane rides fly by.  I’ve put together a list of books that are all great, and very pertinent to the topic of yoga travel.  Enjoy.

Eat, Pray, Love – Elizabeth Gilbert

Likely the most recommended book  for a yoga travel retreat.  An intensely articulate and moving memoir of self-discovery, Eat, Pray, Love is about what can happen when you claim responsibility for your own contentment and stop trying to live in imitation of society’s ideals.  It is certain to touch anyone who has ever woken up to the unrelenting need for change.   At the age of thirty-one, Gilbert’s journey to find herself takes her to Rome, for pleasure; an ashram in India, for spirituality; and to Bali, to regain balance.  If you haven’t already read this, don’t wait any longer.

“Sustaining a chatty, conspiratorial tone, Gilbert fully engages readers in the year’s cultural and emotional tapestry–conveying rapture with infectious brio, recalling anguish with touching candor–as she details her exotic tableau with history, anecdote and impression.”

Light on Yoga: The Bible of Modern Yoga – B.K.S. Iyengar

The definitive guide to the philosophy and practice of Yoga, the ancient healing discipline for body and mind.  Written eloquently by possibly its greatest living teacher, B.K.S. Iyengar.   Light on Yoga provides complete descriptions and illustrations of all the positions and breathing exercises. Features a foreword by Yehudi Menuhin. Illustrations throughout.

I took Iyengar’s book with on a yoga travel vacation to Thailand.  His writing helped me improve my own practice by understanding the spiritual side to yoga.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Commentary on the Raja Yoga Sutras by Sri Swami Satchidananda

This valuable book provides a complete manual for the study and practice of Raja Yoga, the path of concentration and meditation.  This new deluxe printing of these timeless teachings is a treasure to be read and referred to again and again by seekers treading the spiritual path.  The classic Sutras (thought-threads), at least 4,000 years old, cover the yogic teachings on ethics, meditation, and physical postures, and provide directions for dealing with situations in daily life.  The Sutras are presented here in the purest form, with the original Sanskrit and with translation, transliteration, and commentary by Sri Swami Satchidananda, one of the most respected and revered contemporary Yoga masters.  In this classic context, Sri Swamiji offers practical advice based on his own experience for mastering the mind and achieving physical, mental and emotional harmony.

Yin Yoga – Paul Grilley

First, let me just say that Paul Grilley is the man.  As Yoga matures in the U.S., this book describes a new approach to balance physical and mental health, for serious students and beginners.  All yoga forms emphasizing either muscle (Yang)or connective (Yin) tissue.  Today, all popular Yoga forms are Yang–muscular.  Yin Yoga is unknown, but vital, as a balanced Yoga practice has many benefits, including better preparation for meditation.  Yin Yoga focuses upon connective tissue, which does not stretch or respond to brief stresses as muscle will, so Yin postures are held a long time, with the muscles relaxed.  Acupuncture meridians are also in connective tissues and Yin Yoga is specifically designed to stimulate them.  Divided into two sections, the second part of the book deals with chakras, breathing exercises and meditation, and is fully illustrated with clear, concise descriptions of Yoga postures.

Hatha Yoga Poses for Travel: Twists

April 15, 2010

Road trips and 18+ hour plane rides can leave you feeling physically and emotionally drained.  Anytime you are stationary for such a long period of time, muscles start to lock up and shorten, causing tightness.  Whether its a trip home from work in rush hour or a plane ride to Bali on your next yoga travel adventure, remember to turn to yoga for relief.  In this article, we visit the benefits of a family of Hatha yoga poses, the twist.

The musculoskeletal benefits of twists are profound.  Twisting poses realign the spine and create more space in the intervertebral disks.  Sitting in a chair for an extended period of time has the effect of compressing the spine due to gravity.  Twists are effective at reversing this process.
